Softball Mirrer's 10 Strikeouts, Battaglia's Two Home Runs Powers Big Red to Two Wins

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Freshman pitcher Haley Mirrer struck out 10 Hartford batters in a complete game, four-hitter as the Big Red downed the Hawks 2-1 on Cornell's second day of action at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. In the Big Red's second game of the day, junior Lauren Battaglia hit two home runs and drove in five runs in a 12-7 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Big Red is now 8-9 on the year and will continue at the Rebel Games tomorrow. Mirrer started the game hot, striking out four of the game's first six batters and racked up nine strikeouts through four innings, but a two-out rally by Hartford in the top of the third inning gave the Hawks the lead. Hartford's Sammie Morrison doubled and was driven in on an RBI single from Amanda Sais. Cornell tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning, when freshman Meghan Risica hammered a shot over the left field wall for her second home run of the year. Mirrer got out of a jam in the top of the sixth, when she walked three consecutive batters with two outs. With the bases loaded, Mirrer got designated player Brie Hout to ground to Caitlin Warren at third base, who tagged Alex Morley for the third out. The Big Red got a two-out rally of its own in the bottom half of the inning, when Warren and Risica drew back-to-back walks. Sophomore Jenna Campanolo came through with a single up the middle, scoring Warren from second. Risica was thrown out at third taking a wide turn towards home. Mirrer retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Big Red the 2-1 win. She went the full seven innings, giving up only one run and four hits. She walked three and struck out 10. The Big Red jumped out early in game two against Wisconsin-Green Bay. In the top of the first, Samantha Hare and Erin Murtha singled and Caitlin Warren singled to load the bases. Risica reached on an error, allowing all three runners to score. Sarah Ruben singled through the left side of the infield, knocking in Risica. Lauren Battaglia drilled her second career home run - a shot to straight-away center, driving in two runs. The Big Red sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the first, getting out to an early 6-0 lead. Green Bay got two runs back in the bottom of the first, getting an RBI double from Jenna Woepse and a sacrifice fly from Kate Sullivan. Battaglia hit her second home run of the game in her second at bat in the top of the third, this time knocking it over the fence in left-center. It was a three-run shot, scoring Risica and Campagnolo who both reached base on errors. The Phoenix got another two back in the bottom half of the inning when Sullivan got another two RBI on a single. An RBI single from Ali Rostlowski in the fifth got Green Bay within four runs before senior Whitney Smith came in to pitch in relief of starter Jenn Meunier and pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam allowing only one run. Cornell put it nearly out of reach in the top of the sixth, as Jessica Berkey hit a triple to right field and Wolf, Warren and Risica each delivered RBI singles. Green Bay got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't get closer, as the Big Red took its second game of the day, 12-7. Meunier went 4.0 innings giving up five runs on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked none. Smith pitched 3.0 relief innings, giving up two runs and no walks. She struck out three. The Big Red will continue at the Rebel Games tomorrow, when it takes on Hartford at 12:30 and Ohio at 2:20. |
